I have a couple of questions about rolling fog.

When does it come out in your matches?

I could see it being fairly strong with a well placed wizards tower and ur Mage pressing in.

Is there a specific combo you like to use rolling fog for?

Most of the time I use it to shut down Akiro's Hammer, or if my opponent starts the game super aggressive. It gives me time to set up and get the tempo moving in my favor. It did not leave my book at this tournament, but I play it almost every game in my local meta.

1. How effective is the lightning raptor? Is it usually first out of the gate? And is that your prime Dodge target?

He is first out of the gate in most games. If I don't play him early, he stays in the book. He is the primary Dodge Target, and the primary target for Giant Size. However, both of those spells work well elsewhere.

As far as how effective he is, really depends on my opponent. If they go for him early, he is effective in drawing out their mana and actions. If they wait, they have to work harder to play around his counterstrike.

I would not say he is necesary, but 4 out of 5 games, I feel that he is more than worth his mana cost.

2. Why no huggin? To much mana investment bc it dies too quickly or not enough spells for ot to cast?

I have found that he usually dies within a turn of playing him, I don't waste my time.

3. I love destroy magic in this book! I assume its for a turbo enchamted buddy or mage but does it hurt you more times than not by getting rid of your enchants?

I usually use it to get rid of hyper enchantment, and I sometimes lose 1-2 friendly enchantments, but it is rare that I lose any. It is about knowing when to cast it. For example, when my opponent has initiative, I move with my last action, and cast it with my first action the following round.

Additionally, I have notes to add a remove curse or 2.

4. With both elemental and mage wand in school, why not run 1 of each?  I know the tower functions as a wand. I like that you dont have them, its different. Just curious.

I don't like wands. They take an action and usually last for 1-2 casts.  It applies more pressure for fewer spell points to keep casting spells. I just run extra attack spells (probably too many). I am looking to trim a few attacks for some extra copies of incantations.

5. Have you tried sanguine thirst on a gremlin? Mending wave to heal all your gremlins? And poison gass wall since the gremlins can just teleport around it?

I have not. Honestly, if my opponent is wasting time on my gremlins, I am winning. I will start chain attacking and stunning a Mage if they start messing with my creatures.

In fact, I had a game in this tourney where someone focused on my gremlins. It took them 3 turns to kill them all, and I brought out a Hydra, a Jelly, and a Wizard's Tower while they were doing that. All while still hitting them with my living gremlins and attack spells.

General Discussion / AW Staff Announcement: Laddinfance
« on: March 02, 2017, 01:02:40 PM »
Hello everyone!

My name is Matthew, and I have worked for Arcane Wonders for a few years now. I have managed every project since the release of Domination, and have done a significant amount of design work on Mage Wars (primarily Academy).

I rarely spend time on the forums, but it has come to my attention that this introduction and announcement are needed.

Many of you know Laddinfance. He has been part of the AW team for longer than I have. He was actually my contact for joining the company.

Laddinfance has recently stepped out of his role at Arcane Wonders. He will still be around, but in a more limited capacity.

I have taken over development of Mage Wars products, and Coshade has taken over the forum/community moderator portion of Laddinfance's duties.

I just wanted to make sure that you were all informed on what was going on.

Have a great day!

Website Support and Feedback / Re: Spellbook Builder
« on: January 19, 2017, 04:24:35 PM »
I discovered Tony's post shortly after posting my question. I have always loved this game and bring it every week to my massive 100+ player gaming group yet can't get people willing to play, not only because of it's complexity, but because of lack of support from the company. The last time I played MW was at GenCon.

Yet last week, out of the blue an old friend I haven't talked to in about 5 years appeared at my gaming group with a friend. they asked what I was playing and I hadn't decided on anything yet, as I had just finished a game of Boss monster. I mentioned that I bought my favorite game ever, but can't ever get people to play it with me. when I told him it was mage wars, his face totally lit up. He owns every expansion except for PvS, and also never gets to play and loves it.

So I ran them both through a game, and not the other guy is going to get it, so I have a few people to play with, yet no real easy way to build new books.  I look forward to next week playing the one guy who is going to bring a book of his own, (he watches tons of the Arcane duels streams), and crushing him with playtest cards that aren't released yet!

But getting a functional SBB is incredibly important. And you are even smaller of a company then you were since letting Aaron go. The fact that players are growing on OCTGN shows that the game is loved, but it appears that AW does not support the players.

I am actually working with the players who update OCTGN to attempt to make it better, as well as fixing the sbb on our website. Improvements are coming and they are high on my priority list.

We are increasing our effort on MW at the moment, and you should see even more improvements (that I haven't mentioned) in the near future.

There was a delay in the production of this product, and it will launch late in the 3rd quarter of this year (assuming that we see no more delays).

World and Lore / Map of Etheria
« on: April 15, 2013, 11:10:29 AM »
I know there is one included in the current organized play kit, but is there an image or pdf available for the map of Etheria?  I am working on a custom game type, and  I would like the reference for geographical accuracy.

League / Tournament Play / General questions about running organized play
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:40:29 AM »
I have a few questions about procedure, and how other stores are running events:

1.)  How much should the store charge to play, and how many cards can be awarded per player?  The owner wants to charge $5 a head and give one promo card to every player.  I told him that $5 for one card was not good incentive, so he wanted me to see what other stores were doing.

2.)  Can the store owner elect a player to run organized play, and upload events?  if so, how?

3.)  Are all of the documents in the kit available online, or just some of them?  I am essentially (unofficially) running the events, but I don't have access to the kit except when at the store.

Creative / Mage Wars playmats
« on: November 09, 2012, 03:40:20 PM »
As a CCG player, I am accustomed to traveling light for events.  I am also partial to playmats.  I recently was traveling to a CCG tournament, and planned on teaching some of my teammates to play Mage Wars.

Problem:  The Mage Wars board doesn't fit into standard sized carry-on luggage.

Instead, we used CCG playmats as a makeshift board.  A standard sized CCG playmat is about half the size of the Mage Wars board.  You can make standup dividers, or draw a crid on a mat, but that's not nearly as attractive as the actual board.  I have made a couple of quick/generic ideas for more permanent (and attractive) solutions, but I wanted to stimulate some creativity in the community and maybe from the Arcane Wonders.

I am not very good with image editing, so they are... meh.

Note: most custom playmat sites require an image size of 24.5" x 14.5" with the outside .25" border being cut off.  150-300dpi is preferable also.
