Stampy and Friends: Anvil Throne Warlord
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:04:56 AM »
This is a small party Warlord build that does a few things differently. For one thing my main hand weapon is a Spiked Buckler and it's been running fairly well for me.

Stampy and Friends:

Attack:
Surging Wave
Hurl Boulder X3
Hurl RockX2

Conjurations:
Wall of EarthX2
Steep Hill
Ballista
Mana FlowerX2
Battle Forge

Cretures:
Titanodon
Dwarf Panzergarde
Dwarf Kriegshammer
Bloodwave Greatbow
Bloodcrag Minotaur

Enchantments:
Ballad of Courage X2
Regrowth
Cheetah Speed
Bear Strength
Rhino Hide
Brace YourselfX3
Fortified Position
Standard Bearer
Marked for Death
Critical StrikeX2
Gator Toughness
Akiros Favor
Rust
Healing Madrigal
Akiros Favor

Equipment:
Chitin Armor
Harshforge Plate
Champions Gauntlets
Steadfast Boots
Veterans Belt
Spiked Buckler
Elemental Wand
Mage Wand
Generals Signet Ring
Leather Chausses

Incantations:
Dispel
Force PushX2
Battle FuryX2
DissolveX2
CureX2
Heal
Remove Curse
Charge
Defend
Rouse the Beast

First turn I double Mana Flower
Turn 2 I bring out the Titanadon
Turn 3 typically involves Genereal Signet Ring and Leather Chausses.
Turn 4 Get out back up in either the Kriegs Hammer or Minotaur.

It's a little slow building up but it gets rolling nicely. The Ballad of Courages are there for the Minotaur obviously. I'm looking to trim some fat in this book with Rouse the Beast, 1 of the Force Pushes, 1 of the Battle Furies, and Standard Bearer all being on the chopping block.

Hi Grizzly,

Have you considered using Helm of Command/Charge instead of the Ballads ?
HoC/Charge seems more versatile to me.
With the ballads you have to make the most of it during 2 consecutive rounds and after that they're lost while the Helm can be used and reused at the right time and can also benefit your other creatures.

General's Signet Ring I would cut as the most you would get out of it is 4 mana and it already costs 3 mana.

Well that's a good point about the ring I'll grant you. The Ballad actually forces the opponent to deal with the threat RIGHT NOW so to speak but I get what you're saying. I don't want the Helm of Command as I just never end up using it. It's an action to cast and an action to use the spell. Plus the BoC also gives the +2 Charge and he can't be hindered so it's a Druid Killer assuming he avoids Tangle Vines.

You could cut the harshforge plate and champions gauntlets for sbps :b lol

I dont see much of what to take out. Maybe a force push and the ring as someone else stated.  If you are in the battle with your creatures you could swap a heal for a mend and save a sbp there
I would keep rouse bc  roused minotaur is scary.

Also, how has healing madrigal been working for you in this book?

Enchanter's Ring seems good here.

I think you should take advantage of your turn 3 more by summoning another creature, otherwise you're missing out on the advantage of an early full action.  This would also help solve the potential efficient dice shortage you're going to have if your opponent does kill your creatures, which I see being a significant problem here.  At least in my experience playing the dwarf warlord, I found that I could make my mage very difficult to damage, but eventually you can be overwhelmed if you don't keep your action count up via creatures, so I quickly put in many more creatures, like Trolls and Orcs.  Kriegsbiels are also excellent and particularly good Rouse the Beast targets, with a mere 3 mana easily netting you  8 dice.  I think 2 Kriegsbiels is the perfect number.

Also, I never pass up Iron Golem when playing Warlord.  There's a lot of creatures that thrive against living creatures out there, and golems are a great SBP efficient way to blank that advantage and build your board.

I can also see defenses and guards being a problem, given that your attacks will mainly be a few big-ish hits each turn, more or less.  Tanglevines could be the utility you need to make sure your attacks go where you want them, and they nerf defenses.

Finally, I feel like cards that control creatures are going to be backbreaking against your deck.  Agony, Aegis X, Tangleroot, Shallow Sea...your dice count isn't particularly high already, and pushing it even lower will really hinder your ability to efficiently deal damage.  Ballista does help, but your low creature count means it's vulnerable.

What's the purpose of the walls?  It's not a big SBP sink, but I'm just curious why you'd need them.  I'm also not sure if you have enough equipment.

TL:DR - I think your deck would benefit from a higher creature count and ways to deal with defenses and guards.  A zone attack could be useful as well.

Healing Madrigals actually saved me a few times. The Elephant takes a humongous amount of damage as you'd expect and he's easy to keep up with.

Yup. If they're dispelling then they're reacting and letting me set the pace. I wouldn't mind another Bear Strength and Rhino Hide I admit.

I think it depends on matchup. If they have enough other actions, they can afford to dispel your stuff.

There isn't an "if" in mage wars that can't be countered. In general I'm happy to let my OPPO ent react to me.

There isn't an "if" in mage wars that can't be countered. In general I'm happy to let my OPPO ent react to me.

This tends to be my play-style as well. I like to set the pace and have others react to me. My take on this is if my opponent is dispelling they're not attacking. And if I'm dissolving and dispelling I'm NOT attacking. Not to say there isn't an appropriate time/situation for dispelling and dissolving. I just find I'd rather hit my opponent hard turn after turn if possible and let him react and bonus if he uses non-attack actions in response.

Maybe once I branch out and actually start playing the pros in OCTGN who post here regularly and win tournaments I'll change my tune, but this has worked very well against my local play-group. They have a tendency to turtle and try to build-up, so I like to rush and hit fast leaving them surprised and on the run.

By the way, really like your book- it looks like a lot of fun to play!

Thank You! It's a blast to play. I just added the over extend and am anxious to see how it plays. I agree there is a time to react as well.

That's where we differ. I play the fact dispel/ dissolve game a lot ( but I'm coming around)
I tend to be too reactive which makes me just get roasted vs shark.

Yeah, the best of the best on octgn often have 3 or more dissolve and dispel each.
I would think a book with 2 or less and no mage wand could be in trouble, but depends on the book and the only way to tell someone is to have the charlotters play on octgn.
