I hope you rediscover your passion for the game

I was 3-1-1 after a blown ruling and missed the finals. My loss and timed match players both made the finals.

I was playing a druid, one of the slowest mages, and i only went to time against house and his double angel build. house was also playing 65 healing spells, so while i was putting the hurting on him, he kept healing. if there was no time limit on that match, i honestly think we would still be playing. when time was called both of us were only down less than 8 points from our starting health.

I wish I had 65 healing spells.

I should also point out that Shark and I played a game with our books online the week before GenCon and in an incredibly fast and nasty match, he won killing me the before my next action killed him.

General Discussion / Mage Wars Draft?

Has anyone ever tried to build decks using a draft mechanic?  If so how did it work out?

Just finished watching round 1 of the finals posted by the great Arcane Duel folks. I have to publicly apologize to Gdieckhaus.

When he first rolled the hammer against the tower, I saw tons of crits and just assumed the tower was down. Then after he gathered up the dice, I only saw one 2 crit, and if the rest were 1 crits, then the tower lives. The non crit dice were absorbed by the tower armor. I have watched and rewatched the section of the video for the hammer roll using a magnifying glass. And there is a spot at 6:26, where there are clearly two 2 crit dice, with three other crit dice left to count, which is enough to drop the tower since it has 7 points. So, Haus got screwed out of playing the remainder of the game. I still push him through the wall on the next turn with first qc, but still, that was 12 dice of damage that he did not have to take. And, who knows how the game would have gone from that point forward with his angels coming online. While I would have had a strong advantage with so much damage on him, it certainly would have been a challenge. I would have kept the pressure up, but it is still unfair that it went the way it did. We should have stopped the match, paused the clock, and reviewed the tape.

Sorry man. It was a spot of confusion that should have been cleared up right then. Especially since there was a video.

No problem... as I said other places... 7 crit is extremely outside of the curve.
Odds were, I was doomed.

I think the value for a time win is fine.  If you reduce it too much you will eliminate from play mages that take time to play.

3 of my 5 games went to time and I believe if I had lost one of them, I would not have made the finals.
Also I think that there were three 4-1 players.  Someone to 5-0 all time wins would have 15 points while a 4-1 would have 16 points so the system in place seems like it works.

Hey all a couple of thoughts...

As the priestess who made the finals, I do believe the wizard is slightly better than the other mages because of the reasons stated in the other thread.  However not so much as its OP.  I ended up playing 2 wizards in the tournament, both of which were in the finals... One I managed to win, and one I totally got whooped!  But that was my fault for not identifying the trap.
I took the priestess build because I felt it was a good Meta-choice.  I like others thought we would see a lot of beastmaster rush builds... and felt this was a good matchup for me.  Also while I never played for time, because I think my build is quite aggressive for a priestess, I felt the priestess would do well in the timed matches.  (because of healing and life gain)  In fact I think that a player exclusively using this and stalling / playing for time / could perhaps be most broken of all

Sadly I think the mage just got better because the academy cards are going to give it another boost.  While the other decks will not get that boost as easily.

Arcane duals interviewed me, and I was not asked about any overpowered mages and watched all the interviews and don't see that they asking everyone about it.

This reminds me of when Star Fleet Battles had a huge tournament scene - SFB is a Star Trek Ship to Ship combat game.  There are 12 or so races... and every year the one that won the national championship (128 players) would always be subject to cries for the ship to be changed.  Most of the time tactics would evolve and players would learn how to deal with the ship.  Eventually we found out that it was nearly always a core group of players that made the finals... why - because no matter what ship(s) those player had, they became the most powerful.

Congrats on the win.  I really liked your comments about action economy, and feel that is something my book lacked.  Sadly your Jinx spells caught up with me in round 6 against Tim, when I planned on a jinx, but instead was the Rust / force push / Wall of thorns combos

Is there any chance that the players can schedule 1 game a week?  I am not sure I can dedicate a whole weekend to this.

Thanks for an incredible match gdieckhaus! :) Despite its length I hope people will enjoy watching it with commentary soon!
I had a great time, and thanks for such a good game.  Crazy Die Rolls on both sides and each of us down to 1 life at different points.

Yes it was too long but hopefully people will enjoy and the moderators will be kind!

Here is the confusion...
"Sectaurus is a non creature familiar ..If sectaurus is used to attack and damage a creature it may immediately cast the spell as a free action"

Familiar rules state
"Familiars are objects that have the ability
to cast spells. Often, these objects can
channel mana as well. When a Familiar
gains mana, place the appropriate
mana counters on the object.
If you control a Familiar during the
Planning Phase, you may select a
spell for it to cast during the round. The
Familiar may have restrictions on the
types of spells you may choose. Place the spell face
down near your Familiar, and tell your opponent that
it is the Familiarís spell. Only your Familiar may cast
that spell during the round.
When your Familiar takes its Action Phase, you may
have it cast that spell. The type of action the Familiar
must take depends on the spell it is casting. The
Familiar must spend any mana that it has towards the
casting cost first. If it does not have enough mana, you
must make up the difference from your mana supply.
The Familiar is treated as the spell caster for all
purposes, such as range, etc. You control all spells
your Familiar casts"

The point is that card states that sectuarus MAY cast the enchantment as a free action when it hits.  But nowhere does it state that sectaurus has to hit to cast a spell.  Nowhere does it say sectuarus doesn't have a normal action phase... it reads as if it gets a free action in addition to its action phase.
